African American Guide to Plastic Surgery: Breasts

While breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic breast surgery in Caucasian women, breast reduction is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in African American women. In general, African American women don’t necessarily desire very large breasts but more perkiness and youthfulness. Due to the effects of gravity, weight fluctuations, or aging breasts sag. This prompts many African American women to choose breast lift surgery (mastopexy)and breast reduction surgery.

Breast Reduction in African Americans

Breast reduction is the most popular cosmetic breast procedures requested by African Americans. Women’s breast change over time. One change seen in many African American women is a significant increase in breast size. This increasing breast size is usually due secondary to weight changes, pregnancy, and hereditary factors. Overly large breast can hang and sag. Additionally, the heavy weight of the breasts can cause pain and limitation of physical activity. Thus, many African American women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery. This surgery not only results in perkier, better proportioned breast, it alleviate the pain associated with large breast.
Breast reduction typically requires incisions on a woman’s breast. Women with a history of problem scars should inquire about limited scar breast reduction, which results in a scar around the areola and vertically down the breast. Limited scar breast reduction avoids the horizontal scar underneath the breast which frequently become widened and raised in African American women.

Breast Augmentation in African Americans

Breast augmentation is becoming increasingly more popular with African American women. Women choose breast augmentation as a means of increasing fullness and projection of their breasts. Breast augmentation results in better balance in a woman’s figure as well as a more curvaceous body. Breast augmentation is performed using saline or silicone implants placed either under the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement) or directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular placement).
It is important to realize that over time augmented breasts may change due to aging, gravity and weight fluctuation. These changes in the augmented breast may neccessitate exchange of breast implants or a breast lift to maintain a youthful contour.
